To improve a jewelry website’s conversion rate, audit the path from landing page to order in a fixed order, score each check, and fix the lowest-scoring area closest to the sale first. Guesswork produces redesigns. A scored audit produces a short list of changes you can make this month and measure next month.
This guide gives you that audit: 40 checks across seven areas, each scored 0, 1 or 2. Run it on your own store in an afternoon with GA4 open, a phone in your hand and your best-selling collection loaded. You’ll finish with a score per area and a ranked list of fixes.
If you already know conversion is weak and want to understand why jewelry buyers leave, start with our guide on why jewelry ecommerce stores don’t convert. This guide is the procedure you run once you’re ready to fix.
How the scoring works
Each check gets one of three scores:
- 0, missing. The element isn’t there, or tracking doesn’t fire.
- 1, partial. It exists but is hard to find, incomplete, or only on some pages or devices.
- 2, done. It’s present, accurate, visible at the decision point and works on mobile.
Add the scores for each area and divide by the maximum to get a percentage. Then read the result with the bands below.
| Area score | Reading | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 80 to 100% | Strong | Leave it; test refinements later |
| 50 to 79% | Leaking | Fix the 0s, then the 1s |
| Below 50% | Broken | Fix this area before anything else |
Score against what a buyer sees, not what your team intended. If the return policy exists but sits in the footer, that’s a 1.
What is a conversion self-audit?
A structured review of a website’s buying path in which each element that affects purchase or inquiry is scored against a fixed standard, so that fixes can be ranked by weakness and closeness to the sale rather than by opinion.
Before you start
Gather four things so the audit runs quickly:
- GA4 access with the last 90 days of data, so weekly swings even out.
- Your store’s order count for the last 30 days, from Shopify, WooCommerce or your platform.
- A list of your top 10 landing pages by sessions from organic search and Google Ads.
- A phone with the cache cleared, to see the site as a first-time mobile buyer.
Pick one high-traffic collection and its best-selling product. You’ll audit that path in depth and spot-check two others.
Area 1: Measurement (6 checks, max 12)
Every other score depends on this one. If tracking is wrong, you can’t tell whether a fix worked.
- GA4 purchases match store orders within a small margin over the last 30 days.
- The ecommerce events
view_item,add_to_cart,begin_checkoutandpurchaseall fire, with value and item data. - Phone clicks are tracked as an event.
- Appointment bookings are tracked as a key event.
- Form submissions (contact, custom design, price request) are tracked as key events.
- Google Ads imports or records the same primary conversions, without counting the same order twice.
If this area scores below 50 percent, stop and fix it first. Our jewelry tracking guide walks through the GA4, GTM and Google Ads setup and the test procedure.
Area 2: Traffic and landing pages (5 checks, max 10)
Low conversion is often a traffic problem. This area checks whether visitors land where they can buy.
- Conversion rate is reviewed by landing page type (collection, product, blog, home), not only site-wide.
- Your top organic landing pages for commercial queries are collections or products, not blog posts or the home page.
- Google Ads search terms are reviewed and negatives cover jobs, DIY, courses, wholesale supplies and cheap fashion jewelry.
- Each Ads ad group sends traffic to the page that matches the query (a “lab grown engagement rings” ad lands on that collection).
- Blog posts link visibly to the collections they support.
Points 3 and 4 are where paid budgets usually leak. Our jewelry Google Ads guide covers negative keyword categories and landing page match.
Area 3: Collection pages (6 checks, max 12)
The collection is where buyers narrow down. If they can’t filter to what they want, they leave before seeing a product.
- Prices show on the grid, for the default configuration.
- Filters match how buyers shop: metal, karat, stone, shape, carat range, price, ring size or length.
- Filters work on mobile without reloading to the top of the page.
- The first row shows best sellers or in-stock pieces, not a random or oldest-first sort.
- Product cards show a second image on hover or swipe, ideally on-hand or on-model.
- A short intro above the grid confirms the buyer is in the right place, with fuller buying help below.
Our jewelry collection page SEO guide covers how to write and lay out collections so they rank and sell.
Area 4: Product pages (9 checks, max 18)
This is the most heavily weighted area because the drop from product view to add to cart is the most common leak on jewelry stores.
- The specification block lists metal, karat, stone type, shape, carat weight, color, clarity and dimensions where relevant.
- Certified stones show the lab and report number, with a link to view the report.
- Natural or lab grown origin is stated near the price.
- Images include on-hand or on-model shots and a scale reference, plus video for higher-value pieces.
- The return window, resizing terms and warranty are summarized near the add-to-cart button.
- Shipping and insurance terms appear on the page, before the cart.
- A ring size guide or chain length guide is linked next to the size selector.
- Financing, if offered, shows as a monthly figure near the price.
- A way to ask a question (phone, chat or virtual appointment) is visible without scrolling far.
Only show terms you actually offer, and check that they apply to the specific product. Custom and engraved pieces often have different return rules. Our jewelry product page SEO guide covers how to write these pages for search as well as sales.
Area 5: Cart and checkout (6 checks, max 12)
Buyers who start checkout on a high-value piece have decided. Every obstacle here costs an order you’d already won.
- Guest checkout is available.
- Express wallets and PayPal appear on mobile.
- The cart shows the full cost, including shipping, insurance and estimated taxes, before checkout.
- Buyers are told in advance if large orders may get a verification call or require shipping to the billing address.
- No pop-ups, upsell apps or slow scripts interrupt the cart on mobile.
- GA4 shows the drop between
add_shipping_infoandadd_payment_info, so you can see which checkout step loses buyers.
Place a test order on mobile with a low-priced item and time it. Count every field and every page. Then refund it.
Area 6: Offline and assisted paths (4 checks, max 8)
Many jewelry purchases start online and finish on the phone, at an appointment or in the showroom. A site that only scores online orders undervalues itself.
- A “book an appointment” option appears on bridal, engagement and custom pages, not only on the contact page.
- The booking form asks only what you need to prepare the appointment (name, contact, date, interest).
- Phone numbers are tap-to-call on mobile and tracked.
- Staff record how each appointment and walk-in buyer found you, and that data is reviewed monthly.
For showroom jewelers, this area often matters more than checkout. Our local SEO for jewelers service covers appointment and call tracking alongside Maps visibility.
Online-first store
- Weight Areas 4 and 5 highest
- Product page trust and checkout drive revenue
- Offline paths still count for high-value pieces
Showroom jeweler
- Weight Area 6 alongside Area 4
- Appointments and calls are the primary conversion
- Checkout matters less than booking friction
Area 7: Mobile and speed (4 checks, max 8)
- The add-to-cart button or booking button is visible on product pages without scrolling past the gallery, or is sticky.
- Product galleries load quickly on a mid-range phone over mobile data.
- Core Web Vitals in Search Console show product and collection templates passing, or close to it.
- Text, prices and specs are readable without zooming, and tap targets aren’t crowded.
Jewelry galleries are image-heavy, so compressed modern formats and lazy loading below the first image matter. Our technical SEO for jewelry service handles template speed on large catalogs.
Total the score and rank the fixes
You now have seven area percentages. Rank fixes with two rules:
- Broken measurement comes first, whatever else scores low.
- Among the rest, fix the lowest-scoring area closest to the sale. Checkout sits closer than product pages, product pages closer than collections, collections closer than traffic. If Area 5 and Area 3 both sit at 50 percent, fix checkout first.
Within each area, fix the 0s before the 1s, and start with checks that need content or settings changes rather than theme development.
- 01
Step 1
Fix one area at a time
Make the changes for the weakest area, note the date in an annotation or change log, and leave other areas alone so you can attribute the result.
- 02
Step 2
Measure for four weeks or more
Compare conversion rate and the relevant funnel step against the four weeks before. Use a longer window on lower-traffic stores.
- 03
Step 3
Compare like periods
Holidays, Valentine’s Day and proposal season (late November to February) distort short comparisons. Compare against the same weeks last year when possible.
- 04
Step 4
Re-score and move on
Re-run the area’s checks, record the new score and move to the next weakest area. Re-run the full audit every quarter.
When to get help
You can run this audit yourself. Get help when the fixes need theme or checkout changes, when tracking scores below 50 percent and you can’t trust the numbers, or when you want to test changes on high-traffic pages without risking sales in peak season.
Our jewelry conversion rate optimization service runs this audit with your data, builds the fixes and tests them with a method that accounts for seasonality. If the theme itself is the problem, our jewelry website design team rebuilds with these checks built in.
Jewelry conversion audit FAQs
How often should I run a conversion audit on my jewelry website?
Run the full audit once a quarter and re-score individual areas after each round of fixes. Also run it after a theme change, a platform migration or a new checkout app, because those changes often break tracking or trust elements.
What should I fix first if several areas score low?
Fix measurement first, because you can’t evaluate any other fix without it. Then fix the lowest-scoring area closest to the sale: checkout before product pages, product pages before collections.
Can I run this audit without GA4?
You can score the page elements without it, but not the measurement, traffic and checkout-step checks. Set up GA4 with ecommerce events and key events for calls, appointments and forms before you start fixing, so you can measure the effect.
How is this different from a jewelry SEO audit?
An SEO audit checks whether pages get found: indexing, relevance, links and technical health. A conversion audit checks whether visitors who arrive buy or book. Our audit covers both, because ranking pages that don’t convert waste the traffic they earn.
How long should I wait to judge a fix?
At least four weeks on pages with steady traffic, and longer on lower-traffic pages. Avoid comparing a period that includes a seasonal peak with one that doesn’t.
Should showroom jewelers use the same scoring?
Use the same checks but weight Area 6, offline and assisted paths, alongside product pages. For a showroom, appointments and calls are usually the primary conversion, and checkout matters less.
